MOUNT ATHOS
Athos peninsula has escaped the clutches of modern development, due to its monastic community. Founded around the 9th century, is also known as ‘Agion Oros’ or 'Holy Mountain'. Mount Athos is an Orthodox spiritual center that has an autonomous statute since the early Byzantine times. 'Holy Mountain', which is forbidden to women and children, is an important center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism in northeastern Greece. Enveloped with beautiful wild forest, the steep slopes of Mount Athos are dotted with 20 imposing monasteries.
Because of its religious importance, the architecture and preservation of the flora and fauna around the mountain, Mount Athos was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.
